(I'm not sure about architectural though, it's definitely more for "parts" than "plans"). It's what I reach for instead of a piece of paper when I want to clarify an idea in my head.įreeCAD on the other hand is for precision work. It's got such a friendly interface that you can have a rough outline of what you want up in 30 minutes. For visualisation and "sketching", I'd say SketchUp is unbeatable. My usage of these tools is hobbyist at best (ocassionally enclosures or some such for work, but I am certainly not an architect).Īs I said, I think they both have a place. Is building it in FreeCAD doable and worth my time? Would Sketchup be better suited, are they equal, or is FreeCAD more aimed towards architecture and construction? I'm personally planning to design and frame a house. I also see (for example, on HGTV) MANY people using Sketchup. It sounds a lot better to go "I just used Sketchup" rather than "just finished the model on FreeCAD". My biggest hold out is, like you said, FreeCAD's clunky interface and to a lesser degree low adoption and clunky name. After trying the Adobe suite, worrying about commercial use, switching OSs without the software transferring and so on, I'm sick of using proprietary software and I simply want to use stuff that's open and community driven. I really would love to see FreeCAD take a leap in popularity. I currently design EVERYTHING parametric in OpenSCAD but it doesn't seem like a great fit for architecture which I want to try soon. This is the exact answer I'm looking for.
